Chapter 15 - Confrontation in the Dark

Maddie didn't answer. She stood firmly in the center of the study, the firearm held steady at her side, her eyes locked on the heavy oak door.

Bang!

A heavy blow struck the wooden panels, splintering the frame near the deadbolt. Vanessa was throwing her entire weight against the door, driven by a psychotic, consuming frenzy of hatred.

Bang!

The lock gave way with a loud snap, and the door swung violently inward.

Vanessa stepped into the dim light of the study. She looked unhinged—her dark hair tangled, her eyes bloodshot and wild, clutching a heavy metal tire iron in her right hand. She took a slow, triumphant step forward, a twisted smile curving across her pale lips.

"Surprise, Maddie," Vanessa whispered, raising the iron rod. "End of the road."

Maddie didn't scream. She didn't cower. She raised the firearm with lethal precision, the barrel pointing squarely at Vanessa’s chest.

"Step one more foot forward, Vanessa, and I will end this right here," Maddie said, her voice dropping into an icy, terrifying register that echoed off the study walls. "You crossed state lines, you breached a private residence, and you threatened my child. That is enough to ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a box even darker than the one Grant is currently rotting in."

Vanessa froze. Her eyes darted down to the barrel of the gun, then back up to Maddie’s face. She saw no fear there—only a cold, unyielding wall of absolute power.

For a second, the manic confidence flickered in Vanessa’s eyes, replaced by a sudden, creeping panic. She had expected a broken housewife; she was staring down a commander.

"You think you won everything," Vanessa snarled, her voice shaking with rage as she lowered the iron bar slightly. "You think your little empire is safe. But the board vote is in six hours. The media leaks are already dropping. By noon tomorrow, Aegis Capital will belong to me and my investors, and you’ll be bankrupt, broken, and begging on the streets!"

"Is that what you told yourself while hiding in that cheap basement in Providence?" Maddie replied smoothly, her finger resting lightly against the trigger. "Did you really think I wouldn't trace your burner phones and your offshore proxy accounts before you even crossed the Vermont border?"

Vanessa’s face drained of all remaining color. "What... what did you say?"

At that exact second, the sound of heavy sirens wailed through the crisp mountain air outside, rapidly closing in on the estate. Flashing red and blue lights painted the study walls in strobing flashes of alarm.

Through the open doorway, the deep, authoritative shouts of federal marshals echoed up the stairs: "Federal agents! Drop your weapon! You are completely surrounded!"
