Chapter 14 - The Echo of Betrayal

Before Clara could answer, a loud, concussive thud reverberated through the lower level of the estate—the sound of heavy oak splintering under brute force.
Maddie’s breath hitched. The intruder hadn't broken in through the front; they had bypassed the smart locks entirely using a master override code that only two people on earth possessed: Grant Sterling... or the executive assistant who had programmed the building’s network architecture ten years ago.
Footsteps. Heavy, measured, and deliberate, pacing across the hardwood floors of the ground-floor hallway. Then, the distinct, slow creak of stairs ascending toward the private family wing.
Maddie pulled a heavy brass key from her pocket, unlocking the hidden wall safe behind her bookcase. She reached inside and withdrew a compact, licensed firearm—a tool she had sworn she would never touch, yet kept for moments exactly like this. She checked the chamber, her hands completely steady, driven by the primal, unyielding instinct of a mother protecting her child.
Down the hall, Lily’s soft, sleepy murmur drifted from the nursery.
"Mommy?" a tiny voice called out through the baby monitor resting on Maddie’s desk.
"Stay in your bed, sweetheart," Maddie whispered into the intercom, her voice trembling slightly despite her iron resolve. "Close your eyes and count to fifty. Mommy is right here."
The footsteps stopped directly outside Maddie’s study door.
A moment of absolute, suffocating silence hung in the air. Then, a low, raspy laugh echoed from the hallway—a voice that sent a freezing shiver straight down Maddie’s spine. It wasn't Grant. It wasn't even a man's voice.

It was Vanessa.
"Open the door, Maddie," Vanessa’s voice purred through the thick wood, dripping with venomous malice. "You didn't really think you could lock me out of your perfect little kingdom forever, did you?"
