Chapter 23 - The Tremor

Back in Boston, the forty-fifth-floor boardroom of Aegis Capital was bathed in the harsh, flickering light of emergency market alerts.
Maddie stood at the head of the table, her hands resting flat against the mahogany surface, staring at the red numerals flashing across the central monitor. In less than six hours, over forty million dollars in European supply chain investments had been frozen by an anonymous international clearinghouse citing sudden regulatory compliance audits.
"How is this possible?" Henderson, the senior hedge-fund partner who had once opposed her, demanded, his voice tight with panic. "Our compliance is pristine! Every green energy patent is certified under EU standards!"
"It's not a regulatory issue," Maddie said, her voice remarkably steady, though her mind was racing at superhuman speed. "It’s a liquidity blockade. Someone is intentionally choking our international credit lines."
"Who has the leverage to freeze institutional clearinghouses across three European nations simultaneously?" Thomas asked, stepping forward with a tablet displaying encrypted data traces. "Even state actors require months of legal groundwork for this kind of maneuver."
Maddie didn't answer immediately. She walked slowly toward the window, looking out over the bustling Boston streets. The name Aurelia Legacy echoed in her memory from Thomas's briefing. She knew this wasn't Vanessa's work. This smelled of old money—dynastic, untouchable wealth that operated outside the jurisdiction of ordinary federal courts.
"Find out who holds the controlling shares of the clearinghouse parent company," Maddie instructed, turning back to face her team. "Look past the Cayman proxies. Look at Swiss private banks."
Before Thomas could reply, the boardroom’s secure intercom chimed. The receptionist's voice came through, trembling slightly.
"Mrs. Sterling? You have a visitor in the private lobby. He... he didn't make an appointment."
"Who is it?" Maddie asked.
"He says his name is Viktor Vance."
The name dropped into the room like a lead weight. Every person at the table froze. Even Henderson looked pale.
"Do not let him up," Thomas warned instantly. "Viktor Vance is a phantom. His family controls half the private banking sector in Central Europe. If he’s here in person, it means they aren't hiding anymore."
Maddie stared at the closed mahogany double doors for a long, silent moment. She thought of Lily, safely tucked away with Clara in the Vermont estate, surrounded by secure guards and impenetrable walls. Then she looked down at her own hands—hands that had built an empire from the wreckage of a broken marriage.
"No," Maddie said quietly, straightening her posture. "If a wolf comes to the front door, you don't hide inside. You invite him in and show him whose house he's standing in."

"Maddie, this is suicide—" Thomas began.
"Send him up," Maddie commanded, her voice ringing with absolute, unyielding authority.
