Chapter 24 - The Patriarch

The heavy double doors swung open.
Viktor Vance stepped into the boardroom. Despite being well into his seventies, he moved with the predatory grace of a man half his age. He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, a gold signet ring catching the light on his left pinky finger. Behind him stood Elena Vance, her expression cold, watchful, and entirely unreadable.
Viktor stopped a few feet from the table, his pale blue eyes scanning the room before locking directly onto Maddie.
"Mrs. Sterling," Viktor said, his voice smooth, cultured, and chillingly polite. "I must confess, seeing you in person exceeds my expectations. My nephew Arthur always lacked the imagination to understand what kind of woman he was dealing with."
Maddie didn't move an inch. She didn't offer her hand. She simply gestured to the empty chair opposite her.
"Mr. Vance," Maddie replied, her tone matching his for chilling composure. "You didn't fly across the Atlantic just to critique your late nephew's domestic failures. State your business before my security team escorts you out of the building."
Viktor smiled faintly, sliding his hands into his coat pockets. He walked slowly toward the chair, pulling it out and sitting down without invitation. Elena remained standing behind him like a silent sentinel.
"Business, yes," Viktor murmured, leaning forward slightly. "You have proved remarkably efficient at dismantling my family's peripheral assets, Mrs. Sterling. First Grant, then Vanessa, and various corporate holdings that were... inconveniently managed. But you seem to have forgotten a fundamental law of commerce: capital never truly disappears. It merely returns to its source."
"The Aurelia Legacy," Maddie stated calmly.
Viktor’s eyebrows arched in mild surprise. "Ah. So your legal team is sharper than I anticipated. Yes, the Aurelia Legacy. The foundation upon which Grant Sterling built his initial fortune—a fortune financed, governed, and ultimately owned by my family's banking syndicate."
"Grant was a self-made fraud who stole his first round of venture capital by forging signatures," Maddie countered instantly, her voice cutting like a razor. "Your family didn't invest in a business; you laundered capital through a puppet. When Grant went to prison, you thought your investment was lost. So you sent Vanessa to pick up the pieces. And when she failed, you decided to step out of the shadows yourselves."
Elena Vance’s eyes flashed with sudden hostility, her fingers twitching against her side, but Viktor raised a single hand to check her movement.
"An impressive narrative," Viktor chuckled softly, though his eyes remained entirely devoid of warmth. "And entirely irrelevant. Because regardless of how the capital was acquired, the legal reality is absolute: the forty million dollars currently frozen in your European clearinghouses belongs to the Aurelia Legacy. We can keep those assets locked in litigation for the next twenty years, Mrs. Sterling. Can your green energy portfolio survive twenty years of bankruptcy?"
The room fell into a suffocating, dead silence. Henderson and the other board members stared at Maddie, waiting for the crack in her armor.
Maddie held Viktor's gaze for three long, agonizing seconds. Then, she let out a slow, steady breath—and smiled.
It wasn't a warm smile. It was the exact same cold, terrifyingly calm smile she had worn the night she walked out of Grant's office.
"You assume, Mr. Vance, that I am fighting to protect forty million dollars in European clearinghouses," Maddie said softly, leaning forward over the table.
Viktor’s smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"
"While your legal team was busy filing injunctions against my secondary accounts in Zurich," Maddie replied, her voice dropping into an icy register, "my primary liquidity channels were quietly transferred out of European jurisdictions entirely three days ago. As of this morning, Aegis Capital has zero exposure to your Swiss clearinghouses."
Viktor’s head snapped up sharply. "That's impossible. Our tracking protocols—"
"Rely on outdated legacy servers that Grant built a decade ago," Maddie interrupted smoothly. "Servers that your family engineered, yes... but servers that I spent three years rewriting line by line while I was still sitting in that penthouse."
She reached down, picked up a single manila folder from her desk, and slid it across the mahogany table directly toward Viktor.
"You came all the way to Boston to trap a ghost, Mr. Vance," Maddie said quietly. "Instead, you just walked your entire family trust directly into a federal counter-investigation for international capital flight and unauthorized electronic surveillance."

Elena Vance snatched the folder off the table, flipped it open, and her face instantly drained of all color. She whispered something urgently in German into Viktor's ear.
The old man’s immaculate composure shattered. The mask of untouchable dynastic power cracked, revealing the frantic panic of a predator who had just walked straight into a hunter's snare.
