Chapter 11 - The Phantom Shareholder

The grand conference room of Aegis Capital Group on the forty-fifth floor buzzed with a low, tense hum of anticipation. Maddie Sterling stood at the head of the mahogany table, her eyes scanning the quarterly projection metrics on the high-definition smart screen. Her tailored charcoal-gray suit caught the morning light, projecting an aura of untouchable authority. Next to her sat Thomas, her chief legal counsel, his brow furrowed over a thick portfolio of encrypted asset transfers.
"We have a compounding anomaly," Thomas murmured, sliding a digital tablet across the polished wood toward her. "An anonymous holding entity registered in the Cayman Islands—Vanguard Apex Trust—has quietly acquired twelve percent of our secondary voting shares over the last forty-eight hours. They are positioning themselves to block our upcoming green energy acquisition in the Pacific Northwest."
Maddie didn’t flinch. Her fingers tapped rhythmically against the edge of the table. For two years, she had systematically dismantled every vestige of Grant Sterling’s legacy, absorbing his corporate assets into a clean, ethical empire. She knew every major player in the financial sector. Vanguard Apex Trust smelled artificial. It smelled like a corporate ghost trying to claw its way back into the light.
"Trace the source funding," Maddie instructed, her voice calm and absolute. "Find out who controls the primary ledger. No offshore trust exists without a physical human anchor."
"We’ve tried," Thomas replied grimly. "The trail leads through three layers of proxy shells, but the final cryptographic signature traces back to a dormant Swiss account that hasn't seen activity since Grant’s trial."

Maddie’s gaze hardened. Grant was locked behind the gray walls of a federal penitentiary, isolated and stripped of his financial dominion. Or so she had believed. A cold realization settled in her chest: someone was pulling the strings from the outside, using Grant’s old network, or perhaps someone who had learned every vicious trick he ever taught.
"Dig deeper into Vanessa Cole’s parole records," Maddie said, turning away from the screen to look out at the sprawling Boston skyline. "People like Vanessa don't just disappear into the background. If she’s orchestrating a proxy war using hidden capital, she’s setting up her final revenge."
