Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Snow

Spring arrived slowly in Oakhaven, melting the heavy snowbanks into rushing streams of crystal-clear water that fed the awakening mountain valleys.

The Willow House had reopened its doors to select guests seeking sanctuary, but the private east wing remained strictly off-limits—reserved exclusively for Maddie and her daughter.

Maddie stood on the wide wooden porch, breathing in the crisp, pine-scented air. Lily was six months old now, a bright-eyed, endlessly curious little girl who laughed whenever the mountain breeze ruffled her dark curls.

Clara walked out onto the porch, handing Maddie a steaming cup of coffee before leaning against the railing beside her. "Mail came this morning," Clara said, her eyes warm with a knowing smile. "From the federal district court."

Maddie took the envelope without opening it immediately. She stared at the return address—the Southern District Federal Court.

"It's over," Maddie said softly.

"Federal indictment for financial fraud, tax evasion, and corporate embezzlement," Clara quoted quietly, glancing at Maddie's profile. "Grant Sterling is facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary. Vanessa Cole is cooperating with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence. They're both completely finished."

Maddie opened the envelope, sliding out the official notice of judgment closure. She didn't feel triumph, nor did she feel pity. She felt a profound, beautiful emptiness—the kind of peace that only comes when a wound has finally healed over clean and strong.

"Do you ever look back?" Clara asked gently.

Maddie looked down at Lily, who was busy trying to catch a floating dandelion seed drifting past the porch railing.

"I look back at the woman who walked into that office three weeks after giving birth," Maddie said, her voice steady and clear. "And I thank her. Because if she hadn't seen what she saw... I never would have found out who I was capable of being."
