Chapter 16 - The Final Collapse

The heavy oak door of the study was pushed wide open as three armed federal marshals rushed in, their tactical gear flashing in the strobe of the siren lights outside. Within seconds, Vanessa was slammed against the bookshelves, her arms wrenched behind her back as cold steel handcuffs snapped around her wrists.
"Vanessa Cole, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate stalking, and conspiracy to commit corporate extortion," the lead marshal declared, reading her rights as she was dragged toward the exit.
Vanessa thrashed against the agents, her eyes locked onto Maddie with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. "This isn't over! You hear me, Maddie?! You haven't won!" she shrieked as her voice faded down the corridor and out of the house.
Maddie lowered the firearm, sliding the safety back into place before setting it carefully down on her desk. She closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the adrenaline finally began to recede from her veins.
The immediate danger had passed, but the real war was about to begin on the trading floor in Boston.

Two hours later, Maddie stood in the master nursery. Lily was sound asleep in her crib, breathing softly, completely oblivious to the chaos that had raged just feet away. Maddie brushed a gentle hand over her daughter's dark curls, whispering a silent promise before turning toward the door.
She packed a single overnight bag, walked out to her car, and drove through the predawn darkness straight down the interstate toward Boston. She wasn't going to wait for the board meeting to come to her. She was going to walk into the boardroom and finish what she started three years ago.
