Chapter 25 - The Counter-Strike

Viktor Vance stood up so abruptly his chair scraped loudly against the parquet flooring. His hands trembled slightly as he slammed the folder shut, his pale blue eyes blazing with a mixture of fury and disbelief.

"You think a few domestic regulatory threats can touch a syndicate that has survived two world wars, Mrs. Sterling?" Viktor hissed, his cultured facade completely stripped away.

"I don't think, Mr. Vance. I calculated," Maddie replied, remaining seated, her gaze unwavering. "Your family's entire European network operates on shell corporations tied to the very same Swiss bank accounts you used to fund Grant’s illegal acquisitions ten years ago. The moment you issued that freeze on my accounts, you triggered an automated federal disclosure protocol embedded in my pre-nuptial asset settlement."

She pointed gracefully toward the boardroom doors, which slowly swung open.

Standing in the threshold wasn't a team of corporate lawyers. It was a squad of federal investigators from the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, flanked by two armed U.S. Marshals.

At the front stood Thomas, holding a federal warrant bearing a federal judge's emergency signature.

"Viktor Vance, Elena Vance," Thomas announced clearly, reading from the document. "You are formally served with a federal asset seizure warrant and a subpoena for international banking fraud, money laundering, and corporate racketeering. All assets belonging to the Aurelia Legacy are hereby frozen pending federal audit."

Elena lunged forward instinctively, her hand reaching into her designer handbag, but the marshals stepped forward instantly, their hands resting firmly on their holstered sidearms.

"Don't do it, Miss Vance," the lead marshal warned.

Viktor closed his eyes for a single, agonizing second. He realized, with a sickening jolt of absolute defeat, that he had underestimated the wrong woman. He had looked at Maddie and seen a victim; he had missed the iron spine forged in betrayal and tempered by absolute maternal fury.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Mrs. Sterling," Viktor whispered, his voice shaking with suppressed rage as the marshals stepped forward and placed handcuffs around Elena's wrists, followed moments later by his own.

"No, Mr. Vance," Maddie said softly, standing up from her chair and buttoning her jacket with quiet, devastating precision. "I'm just balancing the books."

As the federal agents escorted the patriarch of the Vance dynasty out of the boardroom in cold steel cuffs, the remaining board members sat in stunned, breathless silence. Henderson slowly lowered his head, not daring to meet Maddie's eyes.

Maddie walked back to the window, watching the unmarked federal vans load their prisoners down in the courtyard below. The snow was beginning to fall again, dusting the Boston streets in a blanket of pristine white.

The war was over. The shadows had been cleared away.
