Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

Back in the city, Grant Sterling was spiraling. Two days had passed without a single trace of Maddie or Lily. Toll booths across three states had yielded no plate matches; she had taken back roads, bypassed turnpikes, and vanished into thin air.
Striding into the corporate headquarters of Sterling Global, Grant looked every bit the high-powered CEO—impeccably tailored suit, sharp posture, cold confidence. But beneath the surface, his nerves were frayed wire. The hostile takeover of Apex Technologies was scheduled for Friday, and rumors of his domestic upheaval were already whispering through the executive suites.
He pushed open the door to his private office, expecting to find the room pristine. Instead, Vanessa was standing by his mahogany desk, holding a manila folder with a look of feigned concern.
"Anything?" Grant demanded, dropping his briefcase and tearing off his tie.
"Nothing from the state police, I'm afraid," Vanessa said softly, stepping closer and resting a manicured hand on his forearm. "Grant, you need to focus. The board meeting is tomorrow. If Mr. Vance senses any instability in your personal life, he’ll pull funding for the Apex merger. You built this empire. Don't let a postpartum breakdown ruin it."
Grant flinched slightly at the word breakdown. It felt too convenient, too neat. But he was too exhausted, too desperate to maintain control, to push back. "You're right. I have to lock down the Apex acquisition. Once the dust settles, I'll hire private investigators to scour every hospital and shelter in the country."
"Exactly," Vanessa smiled, her eyes gleaming with an ambition so sharp it could cut glass. "You belong at the top, Grant. Not weighed down by someone who couldn't handle the pressure of your success."
She leaned in to kiss him, but before her lips could brush his, the heavy oak doors of the office swung violently open.
Standing in the doorway was Arthur Vance, the aging billionaire titan holding eighty percent of the voting shares in the merger, accompanied by corporate legal counsel and two burly security guards.
Vance’s face was thunderous. He didn't look at Vanessa; his eyes locked entirely onto Grant.
"Shut the door, Sterling," Vance rasped, stepping into the room. "We need to talk about your wife."
Grant’s blood ran cold. "My wife has nothing to do with the board—"
"Your wife," Vance interrupted, slamming a thick stack of printed financial documents onto the mahogany desk, "just filed a series of corporate injunctions through an independent trustee that have frozen all of Sterling Global's secondary liquidity accounts. And worse... she just transferred fifty million dollars out of your joint offshore holding into an account bearing her maiden name."
Grant stared at the papers, his jaw slack. "That's impossible. Maddie doesn't even know about the offshore accounts. She doesn't know corporate law!"
"She didn't have to," a cool, synthesized voice echoed from the speakerphone on Grant’s desk.

Both men turned sharply toward the phone. The line was active. A small, green recording light pulsed steadily.
"Hello, Grant," Maddie’s voice rang out—calm, crystal clear, and utterly devoid of the submissive warmth he had known for a decade. "Did you really think I spent ten years sitting quietly in your penthouse without learning how your empire was built?"
