Chapter 12 - Whispering Walls

Three hundred miles away, inside a dimly lit, damp basement apartment on the outskirts of Providence, Vanessa Cole stared at the glowing blue light of her laptop screen. The room smelled of stale instant coffee and cheap cigarette smoke—a far cry from the sleek executive suites of Sterling Global where she once ruled.
Her hair was cut short and dyed a dull, bruised black; her skin had lost its manicured glow, replaced by the hollow, sharp features of a woman consumed by relentless obsession.
On her screen, a live stock tracker displayed Aegis Capital Group’s shares fluctuating. She watched Maddie’s face captured in a recent financial magazine profile displayed on a secondary tab—radiant, wealthy, powerful, and utterly untouchable.
"Enjoy it while you can, Maddie," Vanessa hissed to the empty room, her fingernails digging deep into the wooden edge of her desk. "You took my career, my freedom, and my future. You think you won because you locked Grant away in a cage. But you forgot one simple rule of the corporate jungle: a wounded predator teaches its cubs how to hunt before it dies."
Her phone buzzed violently against the table. She picked it up immediately, seeing an encrypted burner number flashing on the display. She swiped to answer, her voice dropping into a cold, transactional whisper.
"Talk to me."
"The twelve percent acquisition went through," a raspy, distorted voice spoke through the speaker. "Aegis Capital doesn't know it's us yet. But Maddie is sniffing around the Cayman proxies. She's smarter than we calculated."
"Let her sniff," Vanessa smiled, a terrifying, venomous expression stretching across her face. "By the time she realizes where the blade is coming from, the board will vote her out, and the entire green energy portfolio will revert to our control. Every penny she stole from Grant—every drop of power she flaunted—is going to be ripped away. Are the media leaks prepared?"

"Scheduled for midnight," the voice replied. "Once the stock plummets, we launch phase two."
Vanessa hung up the phone and leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes as a dark, thrilling rush of adrenaline surged through her veins. She was no longer just an assistant; she was the architect of Maddie’s impending destruction.
