Chapter 28 - The Threshold of Forever
The silver Subaru navigated the winding mountain roads of Vermont, climbing higher into the crisp, pine-scented air as the afternoon sun began to dip toward the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of gold, amber, and violet.
Maddie gripped the steering wheel lightly, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips. The radio played a quiet, instrumental melody that filled the cabin with warmth.
When she turned down the familiar gravel driveway, the grand yet welcoming structure of The Willow House appeared through the trees, its porch lights glowing invitingly against the gathering twilight.
And standing on the wide wooden porch, holding a small, laughing child with a crown of dark curls, was Clara.
Maddie parked the car, turned off the engine, and stepped out into the crisp mountain air. She took a deep, grounding breath, filling her lungs with the scent of pine and wild earth.
"Mommy!" four-year-old Lily squealed, breaking away from Clara and running down the porch steps as fast as her little legs could carry her, her bright blue eyes shining with absolute joy.
Maddie knelt down just in time to catch her daughter in a tight, fierce embrace, burying her face in Lily's soft curls and breathing in the sweet scent of childhood and safety.
"I missed you, Mommy!" Lily giggled, throwing her arms around Maddie's neck.
"I missed you too, my sweet girl," Maddie whispered, kissing Lily’s cheek. "More than words can say."
Clara walked down the steps, handing Maddie a steaming mug of herbal tea, her eyes warm with an unspoken, profound understanding.
"Everything is settled in Boston?" Clara asked quietly, watching mother and daughter.

Clara nodded, her gaze drifting toward the majestic, snow-capped peaks of the mountain range stretching endlessly into the horizon. "Then it’s time to start the next chapter."
