Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Horizon

The sun dipped slowly below the jagged western peaks, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of amber, violet, and deep indigo.

Lily ran across the lawn one last time before bounding up the porch steps, throwing her small arms around Maddie’s waist.

"Mommy, look! I caught a firefly!" Lily squealed, holding up cupped hands that glowed with a faint, magical amber light.

Maddie knelt down, gently opening her daughter's tiny fingers to let the glowing insect take flight into the twilight sky.

"Let it go, sweet girl," Maddie whispered, kissing the top of Lily's dark curls. "Let it fly wherever it wants to go."

As the firefly drifted up into the star-studded expanse of the evening sky, Maddie stood back up, wrapping her arms around herself and breathing in the crisp, pine-scented mountain air.

The past was a locked book, its pages sealed behind iron laws and distant memories. The present was a masterpiece of survival, grace, and absolute sovereignty. And the future—vast, brilliant, and completely unwritten—lay waiting before her like an open road without end.

Maddie smiled into the gathering night, ready for whatever horizon came next.
