Chapter 3 - The Breach at MidnightThe piercing wail of the security system shattered the tension in the dining room. Victoria stood up instantly, her CEO instincts kicking back into overdrive. "That’s Sector Four—the private archive vault in the East Wing."

"Impossible," Eleanor said, her face draining of color. "The vault requires a biometric override and a physical master key that only I possess."

Daniel didn't panic. While the two Sterling women scrambled for their phones, his eyes scanned the security monitor panel built into the wall near the butler's pantry. His fingers flew across the touch interface, bypassing the encrypted firewall in seconds.

"They aren't breaking in through the door," Daniel said flatly, pulling up a secondary infrared feed. "They're coming up through the old estate service tunnels. Someone disabled the pressure sensors beneath the greenhouse ten minutes ago."

Victoria stared at him in shock. "How did you access the security mainframe? That code was changed this morning!"

"It’s a standard legacy protocol layered over a quantum-encrypted shell," Daniel said casually, as if reading a grocery list. "Whoever wrote your security system used architecture from a project I designed back in 2021."

Before Victoria could process the fact that her ordinary mechanic was a genius who could hack her home network blind, the pantry door blew inward with a deafening crash.

Three masked figures dressed in tactical black burst into the room, heavy suppressors raised on their assault rifles. The lead intruder stepped forward, his eyes locked straight onto Eleanor Sterling.

"Don't move," the intruder rasped, his voice modulated by a digital mask. "Hand over the flash drive containing the Project Orion blueprints, or the little girl with the pink backpack waiting at 44 Elm Street gets a very unpleasant midnight visitor."
