Chapter 2 - Secrets Beneath the SurfaceThe dining room of the Sterling mansion looked like a museum exhibit, draped in mahogany, crystal chandeliers, and heavy silver tableware. Daniel sat awkwardly in a chair that probably cost more than his entire truck.

Victoria sat across from him, her posture rigid, stabbing her fork into her steak with unnecessary force. "Mother, this is entirely inappropriate. Daniel has a 10-year-old daughter at home named Lilly who is waiting for him."
"And she can wait ten more minutes while a guest breaks bread with us," Eleanor countered smoothly, pouring a glass of red wine. She looked directly at Daniel. "So, Daniel Carter. Fleet maintenance, correct? You fixed the delivery van tonight that stalled on 5th Avenue."
Daniel kept his voice steady. "Yes, ma'am. Faulty alternator relay. An easy fix if you know where to look."
"And you knew where to look in under twenty minutes," Eleanor noted, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Unusual for someone who graduated top of his class at MIT with a master's degree in structural and mechanical engineering five years ago, only to vanish off the grid and take a grease-monkey job at a logistics firm."
Victoria dropped her fork. It clattered loudly against the china. "Wait. What did you say?"
Daniel froze, his spoon hovering inches from his bowl. The air in the room instantly turned sub-zero. He looked at Eleanor, his easygoing demeanor vanishing, replaced by a cold, hardened stare that made even the iron-willed matriarch lean back slightly.
"You dig into background checks on your mechanics, Mrs. Sterling?" Daniel asked, his voice dropping an octave.
May you like
"I dig into anyone who comes within five feet of my daughter—especially when they happen to hold patents that the defense department and rival tech giants would kill to get their hands on," Eleanor replied coldly. "You thought you could hide behind a faded work shirt, Daniel? In my world, ghosts don't stay buried for long."
Hook: Before Daniel could defend himself, the mansion’s heavy security alarms suddenly shrieked to life, flashing crimson lights across the dining room walls.
