Mia and Arthur raced up eight flights of concrete stairs, bursting through the heavy steel door onto the windy, rain-slicked rooftop of the federal building. The city skyline stretched out below them under a stormy, bruised-purple sky.
Standing by the emergency satellite uplink tower, holding a smoking laptop, was a familiar figure in a crisp federal suit.
The figure slowly turned around.
Mia froze in her tracks, her weapon lowering by inches. Her breath caught in her throat. "Director... Directorate Chief Vance? No... it can't be."
The man smiled warmly, though his eyes were cold as ice. He lowered his weapon and closed his laptop. "Hello, Mia. I told you years ago to stay out of corporate finance. You should have listened to your uncle."

The Chief chuckled darkly. "Of course, Arthur. Someone had to keep the machine running. Julian was the muscle, Eleanor was the collector, and I was the shield inside the law."
