Chapter 17 - The Weight of Silence

Back in the cold, sterile confines of the federal prison, the television mounted high in the communal recreation room flickered with footage from the San Diego Business Gala. Christopher stared blankly at the screen, his hollow eyes widening as the camera zoomed in on Victoria accepting her award, radiant and untouchable.
An inmate sitting nearby glanced at the screen, then looked over at Christopher with a cynical smirk. "Hey, isn't that your ex-wife? The one you said was cold and useless?"

Christopher didn't answer. He clutched his plastic cup of lukewarm water so tightly his knuckles turned white. The bitter taste of his own arrogance burned in his throat. He had traded a brilliant, loyal partner for a web of lies, throwing away his entire empire for a fabricated family that turned out to be built on sand.
He turned away from the screen, walking slowly back to his cell as the heavy iron door slammed shut behind him—a permanent prisoner of his own making, while Victoria's star continued to rise into an infinite sky.
