Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Shadows

The charity foundation in Phoenix officially opened its doors under a radiant desert sun, but miles away in a damp, concrete-floored visitor room, the shadows were closing in. Christopher sat hunched over a scratched metal table, his orange jumpsuit hanging loosely off his frame. His hair was thinning, graying at the temples, and his eyes lacked the arrogant fire that once defined him.

The heavy door clicked open, and a prison guard escorted a frail, weathered woman into the room. It was an aunt from his mother’s side—the only relative who agreed to make the trip.

"You shouldn't have come," Christopher muttered, staring down at his cuffed hands.

"I didn't come to comfort you, Christopher," she replied coldly, sliding a sealed envelope across the metal table. "Evelyn’s will was read yesterday. The foundation was fully funded. Every cent of the Lawson trust, the real estate portfolio, and the overseas reserves have been locked away from you permanently."

Christopher’s head snapped up, panic flashing across his face. "Permanently? I am a Lawson! She can't legally cut me off completely! There has to be a contingency clause!"

"There is," the aunt said, standing up to leave. "The clause states that if you ever manage to walk out of these prison gates, you will receive exactly one dollar—a final reminder of the price of your own deceit. Victoria didn't just take your company, Christopher. She ensured you left no trace behind."
