Christopher Lawson sat on the edge of his narrow bunk, staring at a crumpled newspaper clipping someone had left in the mess hall. It was a financial spread highlighting Vanguard Global’s explosive growth in European markets, featuring a full-page photo of Victoria smiling confidently alongside international investors.

His cellmate, a hardened inmate doing time for embezzlement, tossed a plastic chess piece onto the small metal table.

Christopher didn't answer. He gripped the edges of his thin mattress until his knuckles turned white.
