Chapter 6 - Ashes of an Empire

By evening, the Lawson estate had transformed from a scene of grand celebration into a quiet crime scene of shattered illusions. Federal agents had come and gone, taking statements, seizing digital drives, and leaving official notices slapped across the doors of Christopher’s personal vehicles parked outside.

Christopher sat alone on the edge of the grand fountain in the courtyard, his head buried in his hands. The empire he thought he had successfully stolen from his ex-wife had evaporated into thin air. His bank accounts were frozen down to the last cent, his credit cards were declined, and his brother Julian—currently unreachable somewhere in Eastern Europe—had already been alerted by the authorities regarding the legal exploitation of his genetic material.

Victoria stepped out through the glass doors of the sunroom, her coat draped over her arm. She walked slowly toward the fountain, her heels clicking against the stone pathway.

Christopher looked up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "Are you happy now?" he rasped, his voice hollow. "You took the company. You took my home. You turned my mother against me. What more do you want?"

"I never wanted your empire, Christopher," Victoria said quietly, standing just a few feet away. "If I had wanted to destroy you from the start, I could have exposed your embezzlement of Vextor funds three years ago when I first discovered the discrepancies in the ledgers."

Christopher stared at her, stunned. "You knew?"

"I knew," Victoria nodded. "I covered for you. I restructured your debts, poured my own inheritance into your failing projects, and protected your reputation because I believed in the partnership we had built. But you chose to reward that loyalty by parading your betrayal in my face, mocking my fertility struggles, and thinking you could discard me like trash."

She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a low, chilling register. "You dug your own grave, Christopher. I just handed you the shovel."

"What am I supposed to do now?" he whispered, staring blankly at the empty courtyard.

May you like

"Figure it out," Victoria replied evenly. "Without my spreadsheets. Without my money. Without the Lawson name to shield you."

She turned and walked toward the waiting car at the gates, leaving him sitting in the gathering dusk, a broken man surrounded by the wreckage of his own design.
