Chapter 12 - The Ghost of Tucson

Thousands of miles away from the federal penitentiary, deep in the arid expanse of Arizona, a rundown motel room in Tucson hosted a very different kind of reckoning. Michelle sat in the dark, her face illuminated only by the harsh glare of a prepaid smartphone screen.
Her bank accounts were empty. Her aliases were burning out one by one as federal investigators tracked her digital footprints. The panic attacks had become daily, paralyzing episodes where every knock on the motel door sounded like federal marshals coming to haul her away.
Her phone buzzed. An unknown number flashed on the screen. With shaking fingers, she swiped to answer.
"Hello?" she whispered, her voice cracking.
"You thought you could vanish into the crowd, Michelle?" a sharp, distorted voice whispered through the speaker. "You used my genetic material to forge a family, stole my professional history, and left me to deal with the fallout of your medical fraud."
Michelle froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Julian? Is that... how did you find me?"

The line went dead. A second later, heavy, authoritative pounding echoed against the motel room door.
