Chapter 23 - Shadows of the Past

A quiet evening in La Jolla brought a gentle ocean breeze through the open balcony doors of Victoria’s coastal villa. She sat on the terrace with David, sharing a quiet dinner as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of amber and violet.
"You've barely touched your wine," David noted affectionately, setting his fork down and looking at her with a warm, intuitive gaze. "Something on your mind?"
Victoria looked out toward the dark expanse of the Pacific. "Just thinking about how fast a life can completely invert. A few years ago, I thought my entire world was collapsing because I couldn't give Christopher what he wanted."
"And now?" David asked softly, reaching across the table to take her hand.

"Now I realize I was mourning a prison disguised as a marriage," Victoria replied, her eyes meeting his with absolute clarity. "If I had gotten pregnant back then—if my body hadn't somehow protected me from anchoring my life to that man—I would still be trapped in his shadow. My struggles back then weren't a curse. They were an escape route."
David squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You didn't need a miracle baby to save your life, Victoria. You were the miracle all along."
