Chapter 13 - THE LABYRINTH OF SHADOWS

The pursuit led Marcus and Viktor deep into the industrial outskirts of Chicago, far away from the polished glass towers of the Loop and the manicured lawns of the Vance estate. They pulled up outside an abandoned, sprawling steel mill rusted by decades of neglect and cold Lake Michigan winds.
Viktor cut the engine of the armored SUV, killing the headlights. The rain was beginning to spit from the gray, bruised sky, mirroring the oppressive weight pressing down on Marcus’s chest.
"Our digital tracker on Evelyn's emergency pendant is pinging from inside the main smelting floor," Viktor whispered, handing Marcus a heavy-duty tactical flashlight and a Sig Sauer pistol. "The perimeter is guarded by at least four armed professionals. This isn't local muscle, Marcus. These are corporate mercenaries."
Marcus took the weapon, his hands steady despite the adrenaline roaring in his ears. "Where are the boys?"
"Safely locked inside the estate's panic room with the private security detail," Viktor replied. "They won't be able to touch Leo and Liam."
"Good," Marcus muttered, opening the car door. "Let's go get Evelyn."
They slipped through a rusted breach in the chain-link fence, melting into the shadows of the towering corrugated steel buildings. The wind howled through the skeletal frames of the abandoned factory, masking the sound of their boots on the gravel.
Inside the cavernous main smelting floor, a single harsh halogen work light illuminated a rusted iron platform suspended over an empty industrial pit.
Evelyn was tied securely to a metal chair in the center of the platform, her hands bound behind her back with industrial zip-ties. Standing beside her was Julian Cross, holding a heavy wrench, while two masked mercenaries patrolled the perimeter with automatic weapons.
Marcus stepped out from the shadows of a massive steel pillar, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.
"Let her go, Julian. This ends now."
Julian turned slowly, a cruel, satisfied smirk spreading across his weathered face. He gestured casually with the wrench toward Evelyn.
"Ah, the prodigal son returns," Julian mocked, stepping closer to the edge of the platform. "You know, Marcus, you almost ruined decades of careful planning. You thought you could play the righteous savior, strip your mother of her assets, and turn this empire into a charity project. But you forgot one fundamental rule of the corporate jungle: the house always wins."
"You killed my biological parents," Marcus said, taking a slow, measured step forward, keeping his gun raised and trained on Julian's chest. "You and Eleanor murdered Richard and Elizabeth Sterling, stole their estate, and built the Vance dynasty on their graves."
Julian let out a loud, mocking laugh that bounced off the steel rafters. "Murder? Such a crude word, Marcus! It was an acquisition. Your parents were idealistic fools who wanted to give everything away to charity. We simply accelerated their retirement."
Evelyn strained against her bonds, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at Marcus. "Marcus, don't listen to him! It's a trap—!"

Before Evelyn could finish her sentence, a heavy metal door behind Marcus slammed shut with a deafening crash. Viktor cursed loudly as four more mercenaries poured out from the dark corridors, weapons raised, cutting off their retreat.
Marcus was completely surrounded.
