Chapter 27 - THE RATING OF THE GROUNDS

Two weeks after the federal courtroom victory, the foundation held an open-air celebration on the estate lawn. The autumn trees had dropped their golden carpet across the grass, and the crisp November air was filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and the clinking of cider glasses.

Leo and Liam, now ten and a half, were running a relay race with several of the younger children from the community program, their energetic shouts echoing against the restored brick facade of the manor.

Marcus stood near the edge of the terrace, leaning against the stone balustrade, watching the children play. He felt a familiar warmth as Evelyn walked up beside him, handing him a cup of spiced apple cider.

"You’ve been quiet all afternoon," Evelyn observed gently, bumping her shoulder against his. "Arthur Cross is awaiting trial in federal custody, his father’s estate has been entirely seized by the DOJ, and the foundation’s endowment is fully secured in perpetuity. What else is on your mind?"

Marcus took a sip of the cider, looking down at his hands—hands that had once signed cold corporate acquisitions and held the weight of a multi-million-dollar lie.

"I was just thinking about that day at O'Hare," Marcus admitted softly. "Six years ago. If that flight to Boston hadn't been delayed... if I hadn't walked over to those windows and seen you sleeping against that scuffed blue suitcase with the boys... I would still be a ghost."

Evelyn smiled, placing her hand over his. "You weren't a ghost, Marcus. You were just waiting to be born."

"And now?" Marcus asked, looking down into her eyes.

"Now you're home," she replied simply.
