Chapter 15 - THE ASHES OF THE PAST

Marcus pinned Julian to the rusted metal grating, his fingers clamped tightly around the older man's collar. He pulled back his fist, his knuckles aching with the desire to smash the face of the man who had tormented his family for decades.
"Marcus! Stop!"
Evelyn’s voice cut through the ringing in his ears. She was kneeling on the platform, frantically rubbing her wrists where the zip-ties had bitten deeply into her skin.
Marcus looked down at Julian, whose face was purple with strain, gasping for air under Marcus’s grip. Slowly, Marcus unclenched his fist, letting his arm drop to his side. He stood up, towering over Julian, looking down at him with a mixture of profound disgust and pity.
"You're not worth spending the rest of my life in a prison cell," Marcus said coldly.
Viktor stepped up the stairs a moment later, accompanied by two federal agents who had just breached the main entrance of the mill. Viktor snapped heavy steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists before hauling him roughly to his feet.
"Federal marshals," one of the agents announced, flashing a badge as he secured Julian. "Julian Cross, you are under arrest for conspiracy, extortion, kidnapping, and the murder of Richard and Elizabeth Sterling."
As Julian was dragged away, sputtering curses and threats into the dim light of the factory, Marcus walked over to Evelyn and pulled her into his arms. He held her so tightly it felt as though he was trying to fuse their bodies back together, desperate to make sure she was real, safe, and unbroken.
"I've got you," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking as he buried his face in her hair. "You're safe. I've got you."
May you like
"I knew you'd come," Evelyn murmured, tears finally breaking free and soaking into the fabric of his shirt. "I wasn't afraid. Not for a second."
They stood holding each other in the center of the abandoned smelting floor, while federal agents swarmed the facility, dismantling the final, hidden stronghold of the Vance conspiracy. The ghosts of the past—the stolen identities, the fabricated fires, the corporate greed—were finally being dragged out into the harsh, uncompromising light of day.
