Chapter 24 - THE GATHERING STORM

By nightfall, the news of the legal challenge had spread through the inner circle of the foundation like wildfire. Evelyn sat with Marcus in the study, reviewing the probate injunction Arthur Cross had filed through a federal circuit court downtown. The injunction demanded a freeze on all foundation accounts and a mandatory inventory of the estate's physical assets within seventy-two hours.
"Seventy-two hours," Evelyn repeated, her voice laced with quiet fury as she tossed the legal brief onto the coffee table. "They’re trying to railroad us before we can pull the historical witness testimonies from the original 1991 investigation."
"They know that if we get those files in front of an independent federal judge, the entire probate claim crumbles because it was built on fraudulent asset seizure," Marcus replied, pacing toward the floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the dark lawn. "Arthur Cross thinks he has checkmate because he holds the statutory paperwork. But he’s missing the most critical piece of the board."
"What piece?" a voice asked from the doorway.
Sarah, the young legal advocacy fellow who had applied for the fellowship five years ago and was now the foundation’s lead counsel, stepped into the study holding a thick leather-bound envelope. Her eyes were bright with determination.
"When I was going through the unsealed federal seizure files from Harrison’s trial," Sarah said, walking over to the desk and laying the envelope down, "I found a secondary deposition that the U.S. Attorney’s office never made public because it didn't pertain directly to the wire fraud charges."
Marcus turned sharply. "What is it?"
"It’s a signed, audio-recorded deathbed confession from the probate lawyer who drafted the original 1991 Aegis trust amendment for Julian Cross," Sarah said, unlatching the envelope. "He admitted under oath that Julian forged Arthur Vance’s signature on the secondary beneficiary clause three days after the fire."
Viktor let out a sharp, victorious bark of laughter. "A forged amendment invalidates the entire probate claim. Arthur Cross’s whole case is built on a fraudulent foundation."

"Exactly," Sarah nodded. "Which means if we present this to the federal circuit judge tomorrow morning during the injunction hearing, not only does Cross's injunction get thrown out of court, but the U.S. Attorney can issue an immediate warrant for Arthur Cross on charges of mail fraud and attempted extortion."
Marcus looked from Sarah to Evelyn, a cold, hard resolve settling over his features. "Then we don't wait for seventy-two hours. We meet him in federal court at dawn."
