Chapter 18 - SHADOWS IN THE SUNLIGHT

The wedding reception was a vibrant celebration of life, laughter, and resilience. Long tables laden with food stretched across the emerald lawn, surrounded by fairy lights that twinkled as the autumn sun dipped below the Chicago skyline.
Marcus and Evelyn danced their first dance under the open sky to a soft, acoustic melody played by a local jazz trio. The twins were fast asleep, curled up together on a plush velvet sofa inside the estate’s grand parlor, exhausted from hours of running across the grass.
As the song ended, Marcus pulled Evelyn close, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"I have a surprise for you," Marcus murmured, pulling a small, embossed leather folder from his inner coat jacket.
Evelyn looked down at the folder, raising an eyebrow. "What is this?"
"Open it," he smiled.
Evelyn unclasped the leather folder and opened it. Inside were official legal documents stamped by the state of Illinois, transferring full, unencumbered ownership of the historic estate, the foundation, and all remaining uncorrupted assets into a joint family trust bearing her name and the twins'.
"Marcus... I can't accept this," Evelyn whispered, her eyes widening in shock. "This is everything you worked for."
"This is us," Marcus corrected her gently, placing his hand over hers. "The old Vance empire is dead and buried. This new foundation belongs to the people who actually know how to build a home. You saved me from that legacy of lies, Evelyn. This is just my way of making sure you and the boys never have to look over your shoulders ever again."

Evelyn looked at him, her heart overflowing with an emotion so deep words failed her. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder as the fairy lights twinkled above them in the gathering dusk.
For the first time in six years, the darkness had truly lifted.
