Chapter 8 - THE LOCKED VAULT

Marcus and Evelyn walked down the dimly lit corridor of the east wing, heading toward Eleanor’s private study. The room had remained sealed since the day federal agents hauled her away. Viktor had already handed Marcus the master key ring.

Marcus inserted a heavy brass key into the ornate mahogany door. With a low, metallic click, the lock turned, and the door swung open, releasing the faint scent of old dust, expensive perfume, and forgotten secrets.

The room was grand, lined with towering bookshelves and dark wood panelling. Behind Eleanor’s massive oak desk sat a wall-mounted safe disguised behind a framed oil painting of the original Vance estate.

Marcus approached the safe. He pulled a small notebook from his pocket—the personal diary his father had left him before passing away—and turned to a heavily coded page. Using a sequence of dates, birthdays, and corporate milestones, Marcus spun the heavy dial.

Click. Click. Click.

With a deep, resonant thud, the heavy steel door swung open.

Inside weren't gold bars or stock certificates. There was a single, thick leather-bound ledger labeled Aegis Holdings: Beneficiary Ledger, alongside a stack of legal documents and a small, faded cassette tape labeled For Marcus - Read Before It's Too Late.

Marcus’s heart hammered against his ribs. He reached inside and pulled out the cassette tape and the ledger, placing them carefully on the desk.

Evelyn stood beside him, her hand resting on his arm, her eyes wide as she stared at the contents of the safe.

Marcus picked up a legal document sitting right on top of the ledger. It was a birth certificate and an adoption decree dated thirty-five years ago—long before Marcus had even graduated college.

Marcus scanned the document, and the blood instantly drained from his face. The paper slipped from his trembling fingers, fluttering down to land softly on the Persian rug.

"What is it, Marcus?" Evelyn whispered, terrified by the look of utter horror in his eyes. "Whose birth certificate is that?"

Marcus stared at the document, his voice a hollow, trembling gasp.

"It's mine," he choked out. "I'm not a Vance at all."
