Chapter 14 - THE PRICE OF BLOOD

The halogen light flickered overhead, casting long, dancing shadows across the rusted steel beams of the abandoned mill. Julian Cross stepped closer to the edge of the elevated platform, his smile widening into a terrifying display of triumph.

"You walked right into the lions' den, Marcus," Julian sneered, gesturing to the heavily armed mercenaries closing in on all sides. "You thought you could dismantle a thirty-year conspiracy with a couple of federal audits and a shiny new foundation? The Vance empire isn't just a corporate entity. It’s an ideology written in blood and reinforced by absolute power."

Viktor kept his weapon raised, his back pressed firmly against Marcus’s shoulder. "Boss, on your mark, I take the two on the left, you take Julian."

Before Marcus could give the order, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from the high factory windows.

CRASH.

The sound of shattering glass tore through the cavernous space. A heavy grappling hook punched through the upper skylight, trailing a thick nylon rope. Before the mercenaries could react, three figures in black tactical gear dropped swiftly from the rafters, landing with silent precision directly behind Julian’s guards.

In a blur of coordinated violence, the new arrivals neutralized the guards before they could even squeeze their triggers. Weapons clattered against the concrete floor.

Julian’s smug expression vanished in an instant. He spun around, dropping the wrench, and lunged toward Evelyn, grabbing her by the hair and pressing a small, concealed silver derringer directly against her temple.

"Don't move!" Julian shrieked, spittle flying from his lips, his face contorted in raw panic. "One step closer and I scatter her brains across this floor!"

Marcus froze, the blood draining entirely from his face. The gun was inches from Evelyn’s head.

"Julian... put the weapon down," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, though every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring. "If you kill her, you don't have a hostage. You have a death sentence."

"I'm already dead if I walk out of here without leverage!" Julian screamed, his hand trembling as he pressed the barrel harder against Evelyn’s temple. "Drop your weapons! Both of you! Drop them now or she dies!"

Marcus slowly lowered his Sig Sauer, letting it slide from his fingers to clatter against the concrete. Viktor followed suit, dropping his weapon with a dark scowl.

Julian let out a ragged breath of relief, his eyes darting toward the exit. "Good. Now, Marcus, you’re going to walk over to that control terminal by the wall, sign over 100 percent of the foundation's voting shares back to my offshore shell company, or—"

Julian never finished his sentence.

From the shadows of the upper gantry, a single, sharp crack of a suppressed rifle echoed through the mill.

A high-velocity round pierced the rusted corrugated iron wall behind Julian. The bullet missed Julian’s head by barely an inch, shattering the concrete pillar right beside him and showering them both in a cloud of gray dust.

Julian flinched violently, his grip on Evelyn’s hair slipping for a fraction of a second.

That split second was all Marcus needed.

Exploding into motion, Marcus lunged forward across the open floor, leaping onto the metal staircase leading up to the platform. He vaulted the railing just as Julian tried to steady his aim. Marcus slammed his shoulder directly into Julian’s chest, sending both men crashing hard onto the steel grating.

The derringer flew from Julian’s hand, clattering away into the dark recesses of the empty industrial pit below.
