Chapter 28 - THE CORNERSTONE

The following spring brought a season of renewal to Chicago. The foundation broke ground on a brand-new educational wing funded entirely by the liquidated assets recovered from the Cross family's offshore accounts.

Marcus stood at the construction site wearing a hard hat and an orange safety vest, holding a ceremonial silver shovel alongside Sarah and Viktor. Around them, dozens of volunteers, community leaders, and families cheered as the first scoop of dark earth was turned over to lay the permanent cornerstone of the new building.

Engraved on the polished granite cornerstone were words Marcus had chosen himself, words that captured the entire journey from ruin to redemption:

“An empire built on lies will always crumble to dust. But a home built on truth, love, and community will stand forever.”

As the applause died down, Marcus looked out over the crowd and spotted two familiar figures standing near the entrance of the site. It was an elderly couple who had lived in the neighborhood for decades, people who had remembered when the Vance estate was a closed-off fortress of unreachable wealth. They were smiling, clapping, and talking animatedly with one of the foundation’s resident mothers.

The fortress walls were gone. In their place stood an open gate, welcoming anyone who needed shelter, safety, and a second chance.
