Chapter 4 - THE RECKONING AT DAWN

The first rays of sunlight pierced through the storm clouds, casting a bruised, golden glow over the Chicago skyline. Marcus hadn't slept. He sat at the kitchen island, nursing a cup of black coffee, watching through the archway into the living room.

Evelyn was sitting on the plush velvet sofa, her hands wrapped around a mug of tea. Five-year-old Leo and Liam were curled up asleep on either side of her, their small chests rising and falling in unison. For the first time in six years, the lines of exhaustion around Evelyn's eyes seemed to soften, replaced by a fragile, tentative peace.

Marcus stood up and walked silently into the room. Evelyn looked up, her breath catching in her throat as she met his gaze.

"Are they okay?" Marcus whispered, nodding toward the twins.

"They're safe," Evelyn murmured, looking down at the boys. "They haven't felt safe in a very long time, Marcus. Every time a car backfired or a landlord knocked on our door, they flinched."

Marcus knelt beside the sofa, his hand trembling as he gently brushed a stray lock of hair behind Evelyn’s ear—the exact, delicate gesture he had witnessed at O'Hare.

"I am so sorry, Evelyn," he choked out, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down his cheek. "If I had known... I would have torn the world apart to find you."

"I know you would have," Evelyn whispered, a tear slipping down her own cheek. "That’s why your mother hid me so far away. She knew that if you ever found out the truth, you would burn the Vance empire to the ground to protect us."

"And that’s exactly what I'm going to do," Marcus said fiercely.

Before Evelyn could reply, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer. The double doors to the penthouse burst open, and Viktor walked in, looking grim, carrying a thick manila folder. Behind him stood two federal agents in dark suits and a high-ranking prosecutor from the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Marcus stood up, stepping away from the sofa so as not to wake the boys. He buttoned his suit jacket and walked out to meet them.

"Marcus Vance?" the lead prosecutor asked, flashing a badge.

"I am."

"We received a comprehensive forensic audit and a stack of self-incriminating financial records regarding Vance Holdings, shell companies in the Caymans, and systematic extortion tied to Eleanor and Harrison Vance." The prosecutor placed the manila folder on the foyer table. "We have enough probable cause to issue immediate arrest warrants for wire fraud, extortion, and systemic money laundering."

Viktor stepped forward, handing Marcus a separate flash drive. "And boss? That flash drive contains copies of Harrison’s personal communications confirming he planned to legally declare you mentally incompetent next week to seize total control of the hotel chain."

Marcus stared at the flash drive in his hand. The betrayal ran deeper and darker than he could have ever imagined. His own cousin, his own mother—they hadn't just stolen his family; they were preparing to steal his entire life and institutionalize him to cover their tracks.

"Do it," Marcus said, his voice dead-cold. "Execute the warrants."
