Chapter 23 - THE GHOSTS OF PROBATE

Within an hour, Viktor and Marcus were locked inside the lower-level security archive of the foundation, tearing through digital backups and physical legal binders that dated back to the original 1991 acquisition.

The heavy steel door of the archive was propped open, and the hum of the climate-control system was the only sound cutting through the dense, suffocating silence.

"He’s playing a high-stakes bluff, Boss," Viktor muttered, pacing back and forth across the polished concrete floor, his tactical boots clicking rhythmically. "I ran a background check on Arthur Cross the moment he drove off. The guy is a high-yield corporate raider out of New York who specializes in exploiting dead-letter probate loopholes. He doesn't give a damn about the Sterling family history; he wants the real estate value of this property and the remaining hidden liquidity of the Aegis trust."

Marcus stared intensely at a faded microfilm scan of a birth registry from thirty-six years ago. His fingers traced the faded ink of his biological parents' names: Richard Sterling and Elizabeth Vance. Below that, a secondary name block had been heavily redacted with black ink—a redaction that the digital scanner's infrared setting was slowly beginning to peel away.

"It's not a bluff, Viktor," Marcus said quietly, his eyes fixed on the screen as the infrared filter illuminated the hidden text beneath the redaction. "Look at the secondary beneficiary clause on the original Aegis trust document."

Viktor leaned over the desk, squinting at the monitor. The infrared light revealed a handwritten amendment initialed by Arthur Vance on the exact day of the fire:

In the event of the primary lineage's termination or disappearance, all residual assets revert unconditionally to the secondary executing partner: Julian Cross, or his designated direct heirs.

"Arthur Cross isn't just an opportunistic corporate raider," Marcus whispered, the horrifying puzzle pieces finally locking together in his mind. "He’s Julian Cross’s legal son. They’ve been playing the long game for thirty-five years, waiting for me to clean up the Vance estate, consolidate the assets into a clean, highly valuable public trust, and then pounce on a technicality in the probate code."

Viktor’s face darkened into a scowl. "They want to legally seize the foundation, evict the families, and turn this entire sanctuary back into a corporate asset or sell it off to the highest bidder."

"Not while I'm breathing," Marcus said, standing up so abruptly his chair screeched against the concrete floor. "If Arthur Cross wants a legal war, we’ll give him one. But this time, we aren't fighting in their courtrooms."
