Chapter 26 - THE VERDICT ON THE PAST

Judge Vance reviewed the digital drive and the sealed deposition, her eyes scanning the legal text with swift, methodical precision. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the faint hum of the overhead ventilation system.
For ten agonizing minutes, nobody moved. Arthur Cross sat rigidly at his table, his fingers digging white-knuckled into the edge of the mahogany wood.
Finally, Judge Vance looked up, her gaze fixed entirely on Arthur Cross and his legal counsel.
"The court has reviewed the submitted evidence, along with the unsealed federal deposition," Judge Vance announced, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the courtroom speakers. "The probate claim brought by Arthur Cross is hereby dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, based on the documented evidence of forgery, document tampering, and malicious civil extortion, this court is issuing an immediate bench warrant for the arrest of Arthur Cross, pending federal criminal indictment."
Before Arthur could stand up or mutter a single word, two federal marshals stepped out from the side doors of the courtroom, heavy steel handcuffs already gleaming in their hands. They grabbed Arthur by the shoulders, wrenching his arms behind his back as he began to sputter frantic protests.
"You can't do this! This is a corporate maneuver! You're making a mistake!" Arthur shrieked as he was hauled backward down the center aisle of the courtroom.
The heavy oak doors swung shut behind him, sealing his fate with a dull, echoing thud.
Marcus let out a long, slow breath he felt like he’d been holding for months. He turned back to the defense table, where Evelyn and Sarah were already smiling, their eyes shining with quiet triumph.

"It's over," Evelyn whispered, reaching out to squeeze his hand. "Really over."
Marcus nodded, feeling the last remaining ghost of the old Vance dynasty finally dissolve into dust.
