Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Shadows

The visitor who stepped across my threshold wasn't just a messenger; she was a ghost from Rosa’s past. Elena Vance—Rosa’s younger sister, as I soon discovered—unzipped her leather briefcase and laid out a stack of documents that made the previous conspiracy look like child’s play.
"Harold Bennett didn't act alone, Mr. Calloway," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as we sat around the mahogany kitchen table. Rosa stood quietly by the window, pouring steaming black coffee into porcelain cups. "The offshore accounts in Panama and the Cayman Islands weren’t just funded by your corporate embezzlement. They were part of an international syndicate spanning three continents."
I stared at the pages of transaction logs. "A syndicate? You mean my construction projects were being used for money laundering long before my partners vanished?"
"Years before," Rosa interjected calmly, her fingers brushing the edge of her saucer. "They chose you because of your pristine reputation, Edward. You were the golden boy of Miami real estate. Your signature on a building permit meant no regulatory body would ever look twice."
The realization hit me like a physical blow. All those years I prided myself on being a self-made tycoon, I was nothing more than a golden shield for international criminals.
"And Vanessa?" I asked, my voice tightening. "Did she know?"

Elena slid a photograph across the table. It showed Vanessa smiling arm-in-arm with a man I had never seen before—a man whose face appeared on Interpol watchlists for illicit arms trafficking.
"She didn't just know, Edward," Elena said grimly. "She was the primary broker for the syndicate's Florida acquisitions."
