Chapter 13 - The Trial of the CenturyThe courtroom of the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. United States Courthouse was packed to capacity. Media outlets from across the globe spilled out into the corridors, broadcasting live feeds to millions of viewers.

Harold Bennett sat at the defense table, his tailored suit looking suddenly too large for his shrinking frame. Beside him, Vanessa sat with her eyes fixed on the mahogany table, her face pale, refusing to look at the gallery.

When the prosecution called its first surprise witness, a collective murmur rippled through the press box.

"The United States calls Dr. Rosa Maria Vance-Martinez."

The courtroom fell dead silent.

Rosa walked up to the witness stand wearing her Sunday best—a simple, elegant charcoal dress. She didn't look like a housekeeper anymore. She looked like an arbiter of absolute truth.

For three hours, Rosa dismantled the defense’s entire strategy with terrifying precision. She didn't rely on emotional pleas or circumstantial hints. She walked the jury through every single fraudulent wire transfer, every shell corporation, and every falsified architectural permit with the clinical detachment of a master forensic auditor.

When Harold’s defense attorney stood up to cross-examine her, his voice trembled. "Dr. Martinez... isn't it true you gained access to these private corporate files through unlawful trespass into my client's private residence?"

Rosa looked down at the lawyer with calm, unblinking eyes.

"I didn't trespass, Counselor," she said smoothly. "I was employed there. And as part of my duties, I simply picked up the garbage your clients left behind."

Laughter erupted in the back of the courtroom, gavel strikes echoing sharply as the judge struggled to restore order.
