Then, an unexpected visitor arrived at my corporate office.
My executive assistant buzzed through the intercom with a hesitant tone in her voice. "Mr. Calloway, you have a visitor in the lobby. She... she insists on seeing you."
"Who is it?" I asked, looking up from a stack of architectural blueprints.
"Her name is Vanessa Calloway."
My breath hitched. Vanessa was currently serving a fifteen-year federal sentence at a minimum-security correctional facility in central Florida. How was she standing in my corporate lobby?
"Send her up," I said coldly.
Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of my office swung open. Vanessa stepped inside. Gone were the designer silk gowns, the million-dollar diamond earrings, and the arrogant, triumphant smirk. She wore a faded gray prison jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a simple, unstyled knot. Her face was hollow, aged by stress, regret, and the harsh reality of betrayal.

"Edward," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I... I didn't know where else to go."
