Chapter 16 - The Heart of the EnterpriseI didn't sign the contract right away. I told Pendelton I needed twenty-four hours to think it over.

That evening, the mansion was quiet. The ghosts of betrayal had finally been exorcised, replaced by the warm, steady hum of a house restored to peace.
I walked down the long hallway toward the kitchen. Rosa was there, as she always was, wiping down the marble countertops with quiet dedication.
I leaned against the doorway, watching her for a long moment before speaking.
"Arthur Pendelton offered me the CEO position at Vanguard Global," I said softly.
Rosa paused, her hands resting on the counter, but she didn't turn around immediately. "That is a very powerful position, Mr. Calloway. You could rebuild your entire empire."
"He said I'm the only man who can lead it," I continued, walking across the kitchen to stand beside her. "He thinks I'm the hero of this story."
Rosa finally turned, her dark, piercing eyes meeting mine with gentle wisdom. "And what do you think, Edward?"
"I think he's wrong," I said, my voice steady. "I’m not the hero. You are."
Rosa shook her head slightly, offering a warm, humble smile. "I was just the broom, Mr. Calloway. A house cannot clean itself."
"Then let me ask you something else," I said, reaching into my pocket and pulling out Pendelton's multimillion-dollar contract. I laid it flat on the kitchen island, then slid it away, pulling out a blank sheet of paper and a fountain pen. "If I take this job... will you come with me?"

Rosa blinked, genuine surprise flickering across her face for the first time since I had met her. "As your housekeeper?"
"No," I said, smiling warmly. "As my chief operations partner and executive vice president of internal compliance. Because an empire built without someone watching the foundation isn't worth building at all."
