Chapter 2 - The Arrest of the Ruined KingLieutenant Marcus Vance led the tactical team into the guest room, his service weapon drawn, his face twisted into a mask of grim satisfaction. Vance and I went back ten years; we had shared drinks at charity galas when my name still commanded respect. Now, looking at me, his eyes held only the cold indifference of a hunter eyeing a trapped animal.

"Well, well, well," Vance drawled, lowering his pistol slightly as he took in the mountain of cash and documents. "Edward Calloway. From luxury towers to stuffing illicit funds in guest room mattresses. I expected better from a titan, Edward."
"It's not what it looks like, Marcus," I started, stepping forward, but Vance cut me off with a wave of his hand.
"Save it for the judge. Or better yet, save it for the federal grand jury." Vance nodded to two officers flanking him. "Cuff him. And cuff her too."
"Leave her out of this," I snapped, lunging forward before cold steel snapped around my wrists. "Rosa had nothing to do with this! She's just my housekeeper!"
Rosa allowed herself to be handcuffed without a sound, but as the officer pulled her arms behind her back, she cast one final, piercing look toward me. It wasn't a look of fear. It was the look of a grandmaster who had just sacrificed a rook to trap the opponent's king.
As they dragged us down the grand staircase, flashbulbs suddenly flared through the floor-to-ceiling living room windows. Reporters. Dozens of them. Microphones thrust through the open front door like hungry metallic jaws.
"Mr. Calloway! Did you hide the stolen funds? Is this the rest of the embezzled millions?"
May you like
"Edward, do you have a statement regarding your wife's filing for sole custody?"
Through the blinding flash of cameras, standing right on the edge of my driveway next to a gleaming silver Bentley, stood Vanessa. Her diamond earrings caught the red and blue emergency lights, sparkling like ice. And standing right beside her, arm-in-arm, was Harold Bennett, smiling with the greasy, triumphant grin of a man who thought he had finally buried his betters.
