Beneath the main headline, a secondary photograph showed me standing beside Rosa Martinez—now officially inducted as Vanguard’s Executive Director of Corporate Integrity and Risk Assessment.
The corporate world didn't know what to make of it. Wall Street analysts scrambled to figure out who the quiet, gray-streaked woman standing beside the newly minted billionaire was. Competitors whispered in boardrooms, wondering what kind of ruthless auditor had suddenly taken the helm of the industry's most powerful new player.
We didn't care about the whispers.
On our first day in the gleaming new corporate headquarters in downtown Miami, we stood on the fifty-second floor, looking out over the sprawling skyline of the city where my empire had once collapsed.
"Well, Rosa," I said, holding two cups of fresh coffee as we looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. "What do you think of the view from up here?"
Rosa took a sip of her coffee, her gaze steady and serene as she looked out over the towering skyscrapers and bustling streets below.

"It is," I replied, clinking my ceramic cup gently against hers. "Because this time, we built it together."
